The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) said it will start the process to enforce operational standards to aim at reviewing the country's electricity grid code and distribution code to meet present realities.

Administrator of NERC, Mallam Imamuddeen Talba , who spoke at the opening of the workshop for the constitution of the review panel on electricity codes, said there is need to continually review and monitor the implementation of the grid code and distribution code so as to improve the method of delivering electricity services to consumers and ensure the efficiency of the network as well as safety of workers within the sector.

He said the workshop was put together to set up and constitute the grid code review panel and distribution code review panel, adding that NERC considered it important that all stakeholders are fully involved in the exercise.

"The review panels are required to be committees of experts with requisite experience to keep the code in constant review and monitor effective and efficient compliance,” he said.

Talba said the panels are to report and advice the commission on the implementation, compliance and enforcement of the codes by all parties concerned, particularly the system operator and the distribution companies respectively.

On why the Rural Electricity Agency (REA) was included in the membership of the code review panel, Talba said the agency remains operational until legally scrapped by government.

"REA is creation of the law. Agreed, there are moves to scrap REA. But until there is a comprehensive and proper processes made by the national assembly repelling the provision of the Act setting up REA, so far that have not been done.

"It is expected that we take it that it is in existence until such a time when the proper legal processes are out in place in place to consequently repeal and determine the existence of REA," he said.
