20120317 AFP Students demanding the payment of scholarships funds and police clashed in the Gabon capital Libreville on Thursday, leaving three people wounded, state television reported.
Police moved to free the rector of Omar Bongo university, sparking violence on the campus. Television footage showed students throwing stones.
"We ask that scholarships be paid and protest against an age limit (a maximum 27 years) for scholarships," a protest leader told AFP, declining to give his name.
He said support for the protest was growing as lectures had been suspended since Monday. The rector also launched disciplinary measures against five protest leaders, he said, adding that two people were arrested.
Police and students clashed for the same reasons in January.
Gabon's SNEC union, which represents teachers and scientists, meanwhile called a high school strike for Friday to demand the payment of outstanding bonuses and promotions.
