French duo Bruno Metsu and Pierre Lechantre are the leading candidates for the vacant position of coach of the Senegalese national team, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) revealed on Saturday.

In an interview with the official website of the FSF, federation president Augustin Sengor said: "We have a short list of five contenders, of whom we can say that two stand out."

He said that Lechantre and Metsu "meet our criteria and have the best experience of the African game of all the candidates."

Metsu, 58, is available after being sacked by Qatari club Al Gharafa in March and has previous experience of coaching the Lions of Teranga having led them to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2002.

Lechantre is currently in charge of Qatari side Al Arabi but has significant experience of coaching in Africa, having won the Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2000.

He also led Cameroon to Olympic gold in Sydney that same year.

Senghor said that the FSF would make a decision on the successor to Amara Traore -- who was sacked after Senegal were eliminated from this year's Cup of Nations in the group stage -- next week.
