20120511 KINSHASA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The security situation in South- Kivu province has been tense for the whole of last week but is still under control, the military spokesman for the UN's Mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), colonel Felix Prosper Basse said on Wednesday.
"During the period under spot-light, some incidents of killing, looting and extortions were perpetrated by armed groups such as Mayi-Mayi and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) in regions such as Kalehe, Mwenga and Fizi," Basse said when he addressed the press in Kinshasa.
He also said that on May 3, a unit of the UN Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) based along Lake Tanganyika, in collaboration with naval and terrestrial units of the DR Congo Armed Forces (FARDC) as well as the Congolese National Police (PNC) , launched operation "Maji Matulivu" (Calm Waters), with a view of dominating this lakeside region, protecting the civilian population and merchant ships and preventing any activities of armed groups, in conformity with its mandate.
