JOHANNESBURG, May 11 (Xinhua) -- A nationwide campaign was launched on Friday with the aim of encouraging South Africans to buy local goods.

With a theme of "Be Proudly South African -- Buy Local to Create Jobs", the year-long campaign will include road shows, business forums and mall activation, said Proudly SA, organizer of the campaign.

For each of the country's provinces, the road shows will kick off with a business forum, followed by mall promotions, expos and meetings with stokvel groups, church bodies, community organizations and schools, said the organization.

"Members of the public are encouraged to take part in the planned road show activities around the country. Local manufacturers will be on hand to showcase their locally produced products and services at the malls. There will also be local songs and dance performances at the malls, along with competitions and giveaways," said Proudly SA.

The campaign falls in line with the broader national developmental agenda and the Local Procurement Accord designed to boost local industries and create more jobs through localized procurement.

The accord was signed in October 2011 by government, business, labor unions and community bodies with a commitment to increasing the number of goods and services bought locally to 75 percent.

Proudly SA, a strong advocate for procurement of local goods in public and private sectors, says that buying local goods would increase local production and stimulate job creation.
