The former Egyptian dictator, Hosni Mubarak is slipping in and out of consciousness following reports about his aggravated health problems.

"The former president's health is in decline, but now it's stable in its deteriorated state," a security official told The Associated Press on Sunday on condition of anonymity, and noted that Mubarak now lives only on liquids and yogurt.

Earlier in the week, reports came in, pointing out that the 84-year-old’s health condition has deteriorated sharply since his recent transfer to the Torah prison in southern Cairo where he is serving his life sentence.

Egyptian authorities have permitted his wife Suzanne and two daughters-in-law to visit him as rumors about his deteriorating health spread.

Mrs. Mubarak has strongly criticized prison wardens for not permitting her husband to get treatment outside the prison.

"You will be responsible for his death," she reportedly said.

On Saturday, Mubarak's wife was not allowed to visit him in the Intensive Care Unit where he had been placed.

Mubarak has suffered from irregular heartbeat. Doctors have had to use a respirator several times since June 2 when he was sentenced to life in prison for the killing of nearly 900 pro-democracy protesters during the country’s revolution last year.

He was immediately sent to the prison hospital after his conviction.

The prison officials have said that he is suffering from breathing problems, high blood pressure, and depression.

Before the verdict, he was kept in the military-run International Medical Centre on the outskirts of the Egyptian capital.

Mubarak’s verdict sparked fierce clashes between the families of the victims and security officials inside the court as angry spectators called the court illegitimate and demanded that he be executed.
