Former Libyan Prime Minister Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi has been extradited to Tripoli, months after being arrested in Tunisia.


The Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) confirmed that Mahmoudi had arrived in Libya earlier in the day and was in prison under the supervision of the ministry of justice and the judiciary police.

"The Libyan government reiterates that the accused will receive good treatment in accordance with the teachings of our righteous religion and according to international standards of human rights," current Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Rahim al-Kib said.

Mahmoudi fled the country following the overthrow of dictator Muammar Gaddafi last year. He is expected to stand trial for his crimes he committed while serving Gaddafi, including crimes against humanity.

He was detained by Tunisian authorities last September after Libya issued an international arrest warrant.

The former premier had initially received a six-month jail sentence for illegally entering Tunisia, but was then released after the appeals court overturned his conviction.

Mahmoudi served as Libya’ prime minister from 2006 until Gaddafi’s final days in power in 2011.

Earlier, Amnesty International warned that he could be tortured or even executed if returned home.
