20120702 Press TV At least 17 people have been killed and more than 40 others injured in grenade attacks on two churches in the city of Garissa in northern Kenya.
The incidents occurred when unknown armed men attacked the town’s Catholic church and African Inland Church (AIC) early on Sunday. The assailants managed to escape the scene after targeting worshippers.
Kenyan Red Cross chief Abbas Gullet said that 10 of those who suffered injuries are in critical condition.
Police said up to seven men were involved in the attacks.
The violent attack came a week after at least three people were killed and 25 more injured in similar attacks in the coastal city of Mombasa.
An important military base has been situated in the city of Garissa from where ground forces have been deployed into Somalia to fight al-Shabab fighters.
Since the dispatch of Kenyan troops to Somalia, major Kenyan cities have become the scene of violent attacks.
Meanwhile, four foreign aid workers were kidnapped at a refugee camp close to the border between Kenya and Somalia on Friday.
