2012-07-11 Xinhua Chairman of Cote d'Ivoire's Dialogue, Truth and Reconciliation Commission (CDVR) Charles Konan Banny on Tuesday expressed his institution's concern over the "persistence of tension" among the country's political class.
"The temperatures have started rising and the commission is worried," Banny said.
He was speaking to the press in Abidjan after holding talks with the special representative of the UN secretary general in Cote d'Ivoire Albert Koenders.
The CDVR chairman said that everyone should be involved in the ongoing process to achieve national reconciliation.
Koenders on his part raised the need for genuine desire by everyone to promote reconciliation and peaceful cohabitation in the country.
He promised the government that the United Nations Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (ONUCI) will support all operations meant to pacify and normalize the country.
During the meeting, the officials of CDVR and ONUCI agreed to harmonize their efforts to ensure speedy restoration of social cohesion in the country.
Cote d'Ivoire is still trying to overcome the challenges that arose from the 2010-2011 post-election violence which led to the loss of 3,000 lives and the displacement of over a million people.
Given the increased political tensions, national reconciliation is being considered as a major challenge to be overcome by the authorities and the people as well.
