Five men were shot dead and 17 were injured after an attack on a traditional coming-of-age ceremony in South Africa's eastern KwaZulu-Natal province, police said Monday.

A group of men stormed and starting shooting at the event in Ngudwini, a hamlet about 100 kilometres (70 miles) from the regional capital Durban, said police spokesman Jay Naicker.

"During the shootout five men were killed and 17 injured," Naicker told AFP. The victims were in their 20s and 30s.

The community safety minister of the Zulu-dominated province, Willies Mchunu, blamed Saturday's attack on friction between two clans.

"KwaZulu-Natal bears the scars of countless tribal and politically motivated bloodbaths, and must never go back to the days when this was an almost daily occurrence," Sapa news agency quoted him as saying.

Around 14,000 people were killed in violence between rival political groups between 1990 and 1994, when apartheid ended in South Africa. Most of the deaths were in KwaZulu-Natal.
