20120826 Press TV At least 11 people have lost their lives and many others remain missing as a result of flooding in two areas of northern Nigeria, officials and local people said.
"Nine bodies were brought to the hospital by rescue teams who recovered the bodies from debris of homes destroyed in the flood," AFP quoted a hospital official as saying on Friday.
Over 1,000 homes were ravaged by the flood in the town of Gashua in northeastern Yobe state, official added.
Earlier on Thursday, flooding caused by heavy rains claims the lives of two other people in the Kiyawa district of northern Jigawa state.
"We lost two people, one in Adele and another in Dangoli village, following heavy rains which resulted in flooding that swept away 10 villages and destroyed around 1,500 hectares of crops," said Basiru Maje, a local council official.
Torrential rains are common in Nigeria from March to September.
