The beheaded body of a Somali journalist has been found in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, making him the fifth journalist to be killed in the country within a month, Press TV reports.
Witnesses said the body of the victim, identified as Abdirahman Mohamud Ali, was found in the northern district of Huriwa on Thursday.
No group has claimed responsibility for the killing.
Ali was an online journalist who worked for a state-owned website.
His colleague, Mohamed Ahmed, called on the Somali government to launch an investigation into the killings of journalists.
“We don’t know exactly why they executed him but the government should provide better protection for the journalists in Mogadishu,” Ahmed said.
On September 24, Human Rights Watch urged Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to consider the killings seriously.
“Somalia’s journalists have long topped the lists of targets by all sides during the country’s brutal civil war. The new Somali president can act to end this horrific pattern by ordering prompt and serious investigations into these killings,” said Leslie Lefkow, Human Rights Watch deputy director in Africa.
