Another Somali reporter has been murdered in the capital, Mogadishu, taking to six the number of journalists assassinated in the country in the past month, Press TV reports.
Ahmed Abdullahi Fanah, who reported for Yemen’s SANA News Agency, came under attack on Friday by gunmen armed with pistol as he was walking past a high school in Mogadishu’s Dharkenley district.
The victim was killed on the spot after being repeatedly shot in the head. The assailants managed to escape before the arrival of government forces at the scene.
On Thursday, the beheaded body of another journalist was found in the capital’s northern district of Huriwa.
The victim, identified as Abdirahman Mohamud Ali, was an online journalist who worked for a state-owned website.
No group has claimed responsibility for the killings of the men.
On September 24, Human Rights Watch urged Somalia's newly elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to consider the killings seriously.
“Somalia’s journalists have long topped the lists of targets by all sides during the country’s brutal civil war,” said Leslie Lefkow, Human Rights Watch deputy director in Africa.
“The new Somali president can act to end this horrific pattern by ordering prompt and serious investigations into these killings,” she added.
