Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi says his country will continue assisting Palestinian people by keeping Rafah border crossing with Gaza Strip open.
“Egyptians can never stand by helplessly when they see the people of Gaza under siege,” Morsi told a conference in Turkey on Sunday.
Morsi noted that Rafah border crossing “will remain open to fulfill the needs of the people of Gaza, including food, medication, education and communication between families.”
The Egyptian president noted that Cairo favors “the establishment of a Palestinian state by the will of the Palestinians, and with Jerusalem (al-Quds) as its capital.”
Israel imposed the all-out land, aerial, and naval blockade in June 2007 after the democratically-elected Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas took over the administration of the territory.
The siege has had a disastrous impact on the humanitarian and economic situation in the impoverished enclave, having turned the territory into the world’s largest open-air prison.
Referring to the ongoing unrest in Syria, he said that a quartet of regional states including Egypt, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia would continue talks to find a solution to the crisis.
The anti-Syria Western regimes have been calling for President Bashar al-Assad to step down.
The United States recently announced that it would allocate an additional $45 million to the insurgents fighting against the Syrian government. 20121002 Press TV
