Kenyan Fisheries Minister Amason Kingi has survived an assassination attempt in the eastern coast city of Mombasa, Press TV reports.
Assailants, however, killed three civilians and the minister’s bodyguard, and injured several others on Thursday.
The attack was carried out during a 2013 general election campaign in Mombasa’s northeastern neighborhood of Mtwapa.
The Kenyan minister said, “A young man came from nowhere within the crowd and grabbed the microphone. He started showing us machetes. He was followed by another four men who were also armed with machetes.”
On September 30, at least two Kenyan police officers were killed in an attack near the country’s border with Somalia. A child also lost his life in a grenade attack at a church in the capital Nairobi on the same day.
Reports say the recent attacks carried out in Kenya may be linked to its military intervention in neighboring Somalia.
Kenya dispatched soldiers over its border into Somalia last October to pursue al-Shabab fighters, which Nairobi accuses of being behind the kidnapping of several foreigners on Kenyan territory. Press TV
