Zimbabwe’s Electoral Commission (ZEC) says it is preparing to conduct a constitutional referendum scheduled for next month, but is short of necessary funds, Press TV reports.
According to a statement issued by ZEC deputy chairperson Joyce Kazembe, the electoral board needs more than USD 100 million to fund the referendum.
ZEC says that the funds should be made available for inspection, the acquisition of electoral material and for the actual electoral process in general.
“They promised that they were going to produce a constituent in 18 months and it’s almost now three years later. So, it may happen, it may not happen,” independent National Constitutional Assembly Madock Chivasa said.
The plan to hold a constitutional referendum in Zimbabwe is now at its final stages and the draft constitution is to be taken to a Second All Stakeholders Conference, which will be held later this month in Victoria Falls.
Analysts blame the government for failing to make accurate plans for the whole process. Press TV
