Tunisia has set June 2013 for presidential and legislative elections, the ruling coalition led by the Islamic Ennahda party says.
“We agreed on the choice of a mixed political system where the election of the president of the republic will be directly by the people… The political system will ensure a balance between authorities and in the executive authorities,” the coalition of Ennahda, Ettakatol and Congress for the Republic said in a statement on Sunday.
The elections will be held on June 23, 2013 and a second round in the presidential ballot will take place on July 7.
The Constituent Assembly, where the ruling coalition has a majority of the 217 seats, must approve the coalition agreement.
Ennahda has headed the government since last October, following a victory in Tunisia’s first free elections after the revolution.
Former dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was ousted in January 2011 after 23 years in power, and fled to Saudi Arabia.
