Hundreds of tribesmen stormed a TV station in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi on Sunday in protest against what they called "false reports" about the clashes in their hometown of Bani Walid.

The protesters from Warfalla tribe, one of the largest in Libya, destroyed most of the offices and equipment at al-Hurra TV station.

Bani Walid, a stronghold of former leader Muammar Gaddafi, have witnessed days of clashes after being besieged by pro-government militiamen.

The protesters set fire to many offices, destroyed all the equipment and attacked some journalists, according to Hossam al-Barasi, an al-Hurra TV employee.

Libyan officials said Saturday that Gaddafi's son Khamis, who had taken shelter in Bani Walid, a town 170 km southeast of the Libyan capital Tripoli, had been killed in fighting. But the news had not been confirmed yet.

Demonstrators said they were furious over what they deemed a false rumor in reports about the situation in Bani Walid, saying it had helped fuel violence in the town and stirred up tribal enmity.
