Kenyan Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has returned from Israel and Palestine, describing his week-long visit to Middle East nations as successful.
Speaking upon arrival on Thursday evening, Musyoka said he held bilateral talks with Israeli President Shimon Perez in Jerusalem and Palestinian Leader, Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. He said the talks centered on the Middle East Peace Process and bilateral relationship between Kenya and the two countries.
Musyoka expressed hope that the international community will continue to support and encourage the peace process, noting Israelis and Palestinians can live together under two states arrangement through direct negotiations.
"The consultation we made between both Israeli and Palestinian leaders were very productive," Musyoka said.
He briefed the Israeli President on the security situation in the Horn of Africa, particularly Somalia. He said Kenya and Israel have a lot to share especially in the field of technology, water harvesting and irrigation.
The VP hailed the cordial relationship existing between Israel and Kenya, citing many spheres of cooperation including trade, cultural exchange, education and in particular humanitarian assistance Kenya receives in disaster mitigation and management.
He appealed to the Kenya Airways management to fast truck arrangement to facilitate direct flight to Telaviv to enable business community to engage efficiently in trade.
During the talks in Palestine, Abbas called on the international community to support the peace process, saying Palestinians and Israelis are ready to live together side-by-side under two state arrangement.
Musyoka said it is important for the Palestinians to take into consideration Israeli concerns over security ever as they declare to engage.
"We have a long standing relationship with Israel and we also understand the aspirations of the Palestinian people and therefore whatever little contribution we will be able to make to bring to bring the two sides together, we will do so," Musyoka said.
In his talks in Israel, Musyoka told President Perez that the Kenyan government appreciated the support that Israel has continued to give Kenya especially in disaster management.
He said Kenya with the troops in Somalia does not have any expansion tendencies and Kenya's soldiers will soon return home and leave the Somali people to manage their country once their mission is accomplished.
On technology transfer, the VP said the east African nation is keen to learn from Israel and its water harvesting and irrigation technology.
"We are encouraged that Israel does not have much land and experiences very little rain yet it grows a lot of food and flowers for export through irrigation this is what we want to emulate," Musyoka said.
President Perez said Israel will help Kenya acquire the technology in order to transform the socio-economic status of her people. "Kenya and Israel enjoy cordial relations and we will always remain ready to support you," he said.
President Perez added a stable Kenya is good for Africa and any problems in Kenya will affect the rest of Africa.
Meanwhile, Musyoka called on the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) to do everything at their disposal to ensure that the election date scheduled on March 4, 2013 is complied with.
Musyoka noted Kenyans are not ready for any further extension of polling day and that IEBC should come up and assure the nation and dispel of current anxiety.
"I hold the view that everything possible is done to comply with the March 4, 2013 election day so as to dispel anxiety amongst Kenyans," he said.
