Representatives of Orthodox Church, a main branch of Egyptian Coptics, have withdrew from the Constitutional Assembly (CA) tasked with writing a new constitution for Egypt over disagreement with Islamic members in the assembly, official Ahram online reported Saturday.
Egypt's liberal forces and Coptics have long accused Islamists, who make up almost half of the CA, of dominating the writing of the constitution, fearing that it will produce a draft constitution that does not meet the aspirations of most Egyptians.
Meanwhile, some Islamists who are mainly salafists accuse Coptics and liberals of depriving their inborn right to live under the complete ruling of Islamic Sharia and the rulings and regulations of Prophet Mohamed.
So far, Egypt has formed two assemblies for the constitution. The current one was formed on June 12.
The first one was elected by the People's Assembly in March. The 100-member assembly dominated by Islamists was suspended in accordance to a decision by the administrative court after it had been rejected by liberal and secular parties.
