Two people were feared dead on Monday morning when an explosion rocked Plaza junction area of Kanti Kori located in northern Nigeria's Kano State, security sources said.
Spokesperson of the military Joint Task Force (JTF) in Kano State Captain Ikediche Iweha confirmed the attack to Xinhua, but could not immediately give casualty figures. However, other military sources in the state confirmed that one passerby and an unidentified security official were killed in the attack.
"Military officers have been deployed to quickly to cordon off the area," Iweha said, adding that the military was yet to gather more information on the attack.
A military officer keeping vigil at the explosion site said rescue officials were also on ground to provide emergency support.
"Apart from the two people that were found dead after the attack, there are probabilities that more casualties will be recorded. No one can give the total number of casualties for now because we're still busy keeping vigil and giving rescue assistance to the people around this place," said the military officer who declined to be mentioned.
Usually a busy area, Plaza junction where the Monday morning attack was carried out is located along the big textile market which has become a Mecca of sorts to traders, especially textile merchants in the Kano metropolis.
The attack in Kano State occurred barely 24 hours after a top Boko Haram leader identified as Abdulkareem Ibrahim and two sub- commanders of the sect were killed in a raid carried out by Nigerian troops in Maiduguri, capital of northeastern Borno State, according to JTF authorities.
Kano State, located in Nigeria's northwestern region, has witnessed a number of attacks often perptrated by Boko Haram sect which had claimed responsibility for several attacks and killing of hundreds of citizens in northern and central parts of Nigeria since 2009.
