The Chairman of the African Union Commission, Benin President Thomas Yayi Boni, arrived in Ghana Monday afternoon to hold talks with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and other Ghanaian leaders.
He came just a day after Mahama was declared winner of last weekend's presidential election with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) protesting the results over alleged flaws.
According to local radio station, Boni congratulated his counterpart on his election as the country's next leader, urging him to preside over an all-inclusive government.
"This election is a victory not only for President Mahama but also for the people of Ghana and the whole African continent in light of the people's peaceful comportment during the exercise," Boni said.
The visiting AU chairman also lauded the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), hoping that the allegations of fraud that they are leveling against the results would be addressed through legal and judicial rather than violent means.
The EC declared President Mahama winner of Ghana's last weekend elections in which he won 50.70 percent of all valid votes cast.
However, the opposition NPP Sunday "rejected" the results. In a statement Sunday signed by NPP General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu- Afriyie, the party said it had serious reservations about the validity of the Electoral Commissioner's results declaration results that, by the evidence, do not reflect the mandate of the required majority of the Ghanaian electorate.
The AU Chairman also held separate meetings with former President John Agyekum Kufuor and Jerry John Rawlings.
National Executive Committee of the NPP will held a meeting on Tuesday to lay out the steps that the party will take in light of these events.
