President Mohamed Morsi said that the statements he made in 2010 about the Israeli aggression against Palestinians in Gaza were "misquoted".
Morsi was asked about his statements during a meeting with a US congressional delegation led by Republican Senator John McCain in which they discussed the democratic transformation in Egypt.
During the meeting, President Morsi renewed commitment to the freedom of belief, saying the Egyptian people have approved the constitution, which enables men embracing different beliefs to enjoy all rights of citizenship.
Morsi also stressed the importance of building a strategic relationship between Egypt and the US based on mutual respect and common interests.
On his part, McCain said he is looking forward to receiving President Morsi in the senate during his coming visit to the United States.
McCain said our partnership with Egypt is built on assistance and investment and this depends on the advancement of democracy in Egypt and the establishment of a political system that respects law as democracy is not just the result of elections.
