Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali said he was unable to form a technocrat government after talks among parties failed to produce any consensus to this end, Shems FM reported on Monday evening.
Coming out of the last talks with representatives of 14 political parties, Jebali said though his initiative to form a new cabinet had failed, "it had spared the country chaos" after the assassination of a key opposition leader.
The prime minister also said he is going to meet with Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki on Tuesday without specifying any details.
Last week, Jebali warned he would resign if he failed to muster a consensus to form a government of technocrats.
The North African country was plunged into a crisis by the killing of Chokri Belaid, one of the main opposition leaders almost two weeks ago.
On Sunday, a statue commemorating the outspoken government critic was destroyed by unidentified assailants a few meters from where he was shot.
