Clashes between police and protesters in Egypt's Nile Delta city of Mansura have left at least one person dead and dozens others injured.

A week of demonstrations in Mansura, situated about 120 kilometers northeast of the capital, turned violent late on Friday when police used teargas canisters to disperse angry demonstrators outside the governorate headquarters, witnesses said.

"One protester died while 30 protesters and 10 policemen were injured in the clashes," AFP quoted the security official as saying.

According to the source, protesters had tried to storm the government building, prompting the police to fire tear gas.

Egypt has been gripped by nationwide unrest in recent months. Demonstrators want Morsi to realize the goals of the revolution that toppled former dictator Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

On February 24, Egyptian opposition protesters gathered near the Cairo’s main administrative building, Mugamma where they chanted anti-Morsi slogans.

On February 8, thousands of Egyptians took to the streets to rally against Morsi after calls from nearly 40 opposition parties and groups for mass demos across the country on the "Friday of dignity.”
