Egypt's Court of Cassation overturned Sunday the 12-year imprisonment sentence against former Interior Minister Habib al-Adli over money-laundering and profiteering charges, state-run news agency MENA reported.

The court also set his retrial on the same case to April 13 before another criminal court, apart from the original one that convicted him and sentenced him to prison.

Adli, who served as interior minister under ex-President Hosni Mubarak for 14 years, was sentenced in June 2012 to life imprisonment along with Mubarak over charges of ordering killing protesters, but early March, Cairo Appeals Court accepted their appeals and decided to retry them on April 13.

Many of Mubarak's former aides have either been acquitted or temporarily released over different charges.

On Feb. 14, the authorities temporarily released former Chief of Staff Zakaria Azmy according to a court order, as he had been temporarily detained for about 22 months although the maximum period of detention without conviction was 18 months.

Similarly, the Court of Cassation has recently accepted the appeals of Adli, former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, and fugitive former Finance Minister Youssef Boutros Ghali, and decided to retry them over similar charges.

Top figures of former administration, including Mubarak himself, were arrested over different charges in the wake of the unrest that started in early 2011.
