Botswana has pumped out 22 million pula (approximately 2.7 million U.S. dollars) from the country's national disaster fund purse for construction of housing units to compensate flood victims.
Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Boitshwarelo Khumomatlhare announced in a statement on Friday that government will build 481 houses for homeless flood victims.
"The 2012/2013 rainy season was characterized by heavy rains which caused extensive flooding in some parts of the country. As a consequence of the heavy rains, many people lost houses which either collapsed or were extensively damaged when roofs were blown off and windows broken," Khumomatlhare said.
Government statistics indicate that total number of households affected by floods in five districts is 1311.
In addition, properties losses, ruined food and other damaged household items were recorded.
Botswana is prone to floods and this year had three districts seriously affected which are North East, North West and Central.
According to government, during the floods disaster committees were mobilized in the affected areas and assisted with provision of food baskets and tents.
As replacement is destroyed houses is ongoing, flood victims continue to live in temporary shelters.
Botswana's national disaster fund is set aside to ensure a high state of disaster preparedness and capacity at national and district level and community to ensure effective, appropriate and timely response to any disaster strike.
