Authorities with the Defense Headquarters of Nigeria on Friday confirmed arrests of 56 rebels in the western African country's northeastern region.
The authorities said in a statement that the rebels were caught Thursday by the military who were tipped off about the rebels. The hideout of the rebels were exposed after a detachment of them who were moving from village to village in a stolen jeep to look for food were tracked down.
Plenty of ammunitions and weaponry were also seized along with the rebels' arrests, including seven packs of improvised explosive devices, two rocket propelled gun chargers, bomb detonators, rifles and shotguns.
Some of the rebels appeared to be building new camps, the statement said.
