South Africa's opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) claimed on Sunday that slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's former Chief of Staff, Bashir Saleh, is hidding in South Africa.

The DA also alleged that Saleh, who is on Interpol's most wanted list, was invited to the ANC's centenary dinner in Manguang in January 2012.

According to the DA, Saleh was also spotted at the 5th BRICS summit in Durban in March this year.

Saleh, the DA claimed, is able to fly regularly - without being detained - between South Africa, Swaziland and Niger.

The opposition party said it will request that the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Police convene an urgent meeting to obtain clarity from the acting Head of the Crime Intelligence Unit, Chris Ncgobo, as to how Saleh has not been arrested "despite being seen in South Africa on several occasions. "

Ngcobo should inform Parliament on when the arrest of Saleh will be carried out, the DA said in a press release.

The DA said all this "points to someone with connections in high-places in the current government."

"If this is the case, and his identity was fully known, then it would seem that South Africa is deliberately harboring a fugitive, " the DA said.

In response to the allegations, National police spokesperson Brigadier Phuti Setati said he did not have information about the issue.

"I'm not aware of those allegations, therefore I can't comment, " he said.
