Newly-appointed Governor of Egypt's ancient city of Luxor, Adel Assad Al-Khayat said Sunday that he had submitted his resignation.
Al-Khayat, a member of Construction and Development Party, the political arm of ultra-conservative Al-Gamaa Al-Islamyia group, was appointed as governor of Luxor last Sunday.
The appointment has stirred protests for five consecutive days due to his affiliation to the Islamist group, which was blamed for a terrorist attack in Luxor in 1997 that killed at least 58 tourists and four Egyptians, resulting in years of crippled tourism and crackdown on the formerly militant group.
"After consultations with other members of construction and development party, I decided to tender my resignation to Prime Minister Hesham Qandil, because we want to push away any more conflicts," Al-Khayyat said during a press conference at his party 's headquarters
