Religious leaders in Gambia have condemned the propaganda made by western countries for the promotion of gay marriage, in their Friday summons in various mosques across the country.
The condemnation was heard when the Supreme Islamic Council of Gambia urged the imams to make it as their main topic of their Friday summons in the country.
"We should not tolerate any gay marriage in our country since it is a Muslim country," Imam Alhagie Abdoulie Fatty told a gathering during the Friday prayers at the State House Mosque in Banjul.
There was a serious punishment on those doing it, said the State House imam, who is also a member of the Supreme Islamic Council of Gambia.
Muslims should respect their religion to avoid such an issue, Imam Musa Colley of the Tallinding Islamic Institute said during his summons at the Mosque in Tallinding.
"Gay marriage is un-Islamic attitude which should not be accepted in our country ... we should not adopt such a life in our society," Imam Bakemo Fatty of Faji Kunda Central Mosque noted.
Gambia won independence from Britain in 1965 and it is a predominantly Muslim nation of 1.8 million.
