Kenya men's team has topped the Zone 5 Sub Zonal volleyball qualifier for the World Championship which ended here Saturday night.
Kenya beat Tanzania in their opening game before humbling hosts Uganda 3-0 on Friday and stopping Burundi by the same score on Saturday.
After losing to hosts Uganda 3-1 on Thursday night, the Burundi side recovered to beat Tanzania 25-13, 25-20, 25-17. But Kenya made sure they won all their matches with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-17 win over Burundi Saturday evening.
The last game of the night saw hosts Uganda seal their second place finish on the log with a 25-20, 15-25, 25-21, 25-15 victory over Tanzania. Uganda's team captain Dickens Otim said they were happy to qualify for the next round of the qualifiers.
"We worked so hard and have won two games and lost one. We shall continue to work harder for the next phase of the qualifiers in Zone 5," he said.
The top three teams of Kenya, Uganda and Burundi have qualified for the Zone 5 main qualifiers where two will represent the zone to the Federation of International Volleyball World Championships in to be held in Poland in 2014.
Uganda's head coach Anthony Ndawula said his boys played well although more efforts are needed. "We still have to work hard on our mistakes before the next phase of qualifiers," Ndawula told Xinhua in an interview just after the game.
