Ten Boko Haram militants have been killed in an operation carried out by the Nigerian army in the northeastern restive state of Borno.

The Nigerian military said on Wednesday that the armed forces had ruined two militant camps following clashes with “fleeing Boko Haram terrorists” in the Konduga area late on Tuesday.

Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said that the military had also used air power during the operation.

The clashes followed an “airstrike and subsequent destruction of two Boko Haram terrorist camps at Mada, Konduga local government area of Borno State,” Musa stated.

“Ten terrorists lost their lives and some ammunition, including four AK-47 rifles, five AK-47 magazines and 250 rounds of assorted ammunition, were recovered.”

“Ten motorcycles belonging to the sect members were destroyed in the air and land raid,” the Nigerian army official added.

Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria since 2009.

Over the past four years, violence in the north of Africa’s most populous country has claimed the lives of 3,600 people, including killings by the security forces.

Boko Haram says its aim is to topple the Nigerian government, which it accuses of being pro-Western.

In May 2013, the Nigerian government imposed a state of emergency in three states in the northeast, saying Boko Haram had become a security threat in those states.
