According to a local official, Egyptian security forces detained Ahmed Fahmy, also the leader of the Muslim brotherhood, in Eastern Province of Egypt’s Nile Delta, on Monday.

Fahmy’s arrest came as an administrative court in Cairo ordered banning of “all activities” by the Muslim Brotherhood as a non-governmental organization (NGO).

The court also ordered the interim government to confiscate all the funds, assets and headquarters of the Brotherhood.

The court ruling sparked the outrage of supporters and leaders of Muslim Brotherhood, saying, “It [the Brotherhood] will always be present on the ground even after it is dissolved."

Egypt has been the scene of increasing violence since the army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi pushed aside President Mohamed Morsi and suspended the constitution on July 3.

On July 4, al-Sisi declared that the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour, had been appointed as the new interim president of Egypt.

After Morsi's ouster, Brotherhood supreme leader Mohamed Badie said the coup against him was illegal and millions would remain on the street until he is reinstated as president.

Hundreds of protesters, mostly Morsi’s supporters, were killed or wounded during the deadly violence that broke out afterwards.
