A second Somali lawmaker has been killed by unknown gunmen in the capital, Mogadishu, in 24 hours, police say.
Somali police sources said Tuesday that Abdiaziz Isak died instantly after being hit by several shots in the capital’s Madina District.
The incident came a day after Somali parliamentarian, Isaak Mohamed Rinoco, was killed in a car bomb attack in Mogadishu’s Hamar Weyne District. The attack also seriously injured another lawmaker.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but al-Shabab fighters have been blamed for similar incidents in the past.
The deadly attacks come as the government is holding the third and final day of security conference aimed at tackling continued assaults attributed to al-Shabab.
Following the death of Rinoco, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called the killing a “cowardly attack,” which would not derail peace efforts.
Violence in Somalia has been on the rise in recent months.
Al-Shabab was pushed out of Mogadishu and other major towns in Somalia by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which is made up of troops from Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Sierra Leone and Kenya.
Somalia did not have an effective central government from 1991 to August 2012. In September 2012, Somali lawmakers elected Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the new president of the country.
