Scores of people have taken to the streets in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, calling for an end to the sexual assaults against women in the country.

The protesters marched in the capital on Saturday to denounce sexual violence against women.

The protest came after a recent video uploaded on video-sharing website YouTube showed a mob of men surrounding a young woman, who was abused in a sexual attack in Tahrir Square during the inaugural celebrations for new President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi earlier this month.

The protesters also demanded the death penalty for the attackers.

Also on Saturday, the North African country’s prosecution service referred 13 men to trial for the alleged sex attacks on women that took place on January 25, 2013, when people marked the second anniversary of the 2011 revolution, and on June 3 and 8 during pro-Sisi celebrations.

“Two groups of criminals went to the square and caught a woman and her daughter. They took the woman to an area near a mosque close to the square where she was attacked and stripped of her clothes,” the prosecution service said of the June 3 attack.

“They beat her and when she tried to escape, hot water fell on her causing serious burn injuries. Despite this, the attackers circled her and sexually attacked her until she was rescued by police and citizens,” it said, adding that three people were arrested for being linked to this attack.

Several women, aged between 17 and 42, were attacked on June 8 by the members of the same mob, the prosecution said, adding that eight men were detained for the assault.

“The attackers separated the women, took them to different spots in the square and circled them. They then attacked the women, beat them and even threatened to kidnap the children of one of the victims,” it said.
