Jolly Tumuhiirwe, the 22-year-old maid, was charged with baby torture in a court in the capital, Kampala, on Monday.

She will face up to 15 years in prison for the crime, which the local press has branded “spine-chilling.”

The child’s father, Eric Kamanzi, who had installed a hidden camera to film their home, was shocked to see the video footage showing the maid throwing the baby girl to the floor.

The maid, who was apparently trying to force-feed the baby, then kicked the child’s face and stomach and dragged her out of the room.

The disturbing video has been widely shared on social media.

State prosecutor, Joyce Tushabe, has said the maid was “remorseful” during the court proceeding.

“She said she was sorry for the act.… She asked for forgiveness from the parents of the child, the nation, and those she said were affected by her acts,” Tushabe said.

Tumuhiirwe was remanded into custody and will be sentenced on Wednesday.

The case has gathered wide attention in Uganda, where many middle class parents hire maids to look after their children.
