Around 1,000 Takfiri Boko Haram militants have attacked five villages in northern Cameroon during the weekend, briefly seizing a military camp.

"The attacks were carried out simultaneously at the localities of Mokolo, Guirvidig, Waza, Amchide, and Makari, villages along the frontier with Nigeria," Cameroon state radio CRTV reported on Sunday.

The heavily armed militants also raided a military camp in Achigachia near the Nigerian border and forced the army to abandon the site, said Cameroonian army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Didier Badjeck.

"After that, the head of state (Paul Biya) ordered the air force to carry out strikes” which compelled the militants to flee from the camp, Badjeck added.

No official report on casualties has been issued yet but some sources said over 100 civilians have been killed during the attacks.

Boko Haram Takfiris have expanded their assaults in Cameroon in recent months, killing over 40 soldiers and recruiting hundreds from the mainly unemployed youths.

On Friday, at least 30 people were killed in an attack by Boko Haram in Cameroon’s northern village of Mbaljuel, just a few kilometers from the country’s border with Nigeria.

Boko Haram, a Nigerian-based militant group whose name means, “Western education is forbidden,” says its goal is to overthrow the government in Abuja.

It has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria since the beginning of its militancy in 2009. Over 10,000 people have so far been killed in the assaults.
