Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, escaped death by whiskers yesterday, while travelling on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The unfortunate incident, LEADERSHIP Sunday learnt, occurred not long after he left the 10th memorial service of his late wife, Mrs. Stella Obasanjo in Abeokuta. One of those who witnessed the accident said the former president was on his way to attend the 80th birthday ceremony of pool magnate, Sir Kessington Adebunkola Adebutu, when one of the rear tyres of the sports utility vehicle he was travelling in burst. The accident, according to the witness, occurred shortly after the Sagamu interchange on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Obasanjo was said to have alighted from his vehicle unscathed and joined another vehicle in his convoy and continued the journey to Lagos. The former president, according to a close source left the country afterwards. Confirming the incident, one of his aides, who also preferred anonymity, said the mishap did not create any havoc to him or his convoy. He said the former president had arrived Cote d' Ivoire where he would monitor the country's general election. "There was a burst tyre which did not create any havoc to him or his convoy, as he immediately moved into another vehicle to continue his journey. "As I speak with you now, we are already in Cote d' Ivoire to monitor the country's general elections. He (former president) is expected back in the country on Thursday," the aide said. Earlier at the memorial service Obasanjo, his family, just as that of the Abebes, still miss the late Stella 10 years after her demise and will continue to miss her. The late Mrs Obasanjo died on October 23, 2005, after a failed surgery in a Spanish hospital in Spain. Speaking at the memorial service held at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, the former president stated that though much had been said of his late wife in his book, "My Watch," she is dearly "missed by me, my family and the Abebe family." Speaking on behalf of the Abebe family, Mr. John Abebe recalled fond memories of the late Stella, saying he missed her too. Senator Ben Bruce in his remark, described Stella as an unusual and global woman who contributed her quota to humanity before her demise. The officiating pastor, Yusuf Obaje in his sermon titled, "keep her memory alive" described the deceased as an epitome of womanhood and urged the family to continue to keep her legacy alive. Deputy national chairman south of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Ekiti State, Engr. Segun Oni, described her as a quintessential woman, with a background noted for humility and integrity. Oni who spoke with newsmen at the reception said his close relationship with the Abebe family gave him the opportunity to understand the late Mrs Obasanjo. Notable among dignitaries present at the event were Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Ogun state governor, Sen. Ibikunke Amosun, Mr. Funso Kupolokun and Ms Evelyn Oputu.
