With 87 days left to the August 9 General Election, political parties and aspirants are racing against time to meet various requirements and beat the timelines set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The timeliness will also inform the electorates on the key activities that will be taking place until they cast their vote and the winners announced.
On Friday, May 13, the Commission engaged political parties through the Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC), with support from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) led by, Anne Nderitu, on election preparedness.
With the election fever going a notch higher, IEBC led by Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati, has published a checklist for all election activities. Here is the full breakdown of all election timelines:
Monday, May 16, parties to submit names of presidential candidates and their running mates, gubernatorial also to submit names of their running mates to IEBC.
Sunday, May 22, IEBC to review Polling Stations and Tallying Centres at different levels.
Friday, May 27, the electoral body will conduct the recruitment of Election Officials starting with Presiding Officers(POs), Deputy Presiding Officers (DPOs), and clerks.
Friday, June 10, IEBC to share the list of successful candidates with political parties and stakeholders.
Friday, June 24, IEBC to receive consideration of political parties and other stakeholders' comments.
Friday, June 24, IEBC to Gazette Polling Stations and Tallying Centers.
Monday, July 25, Appointment of Constituency and County Chief Agents by political parties.
Monday, August 01, IEBC to publish the final list of successful candidates (POs, DPOs, and Clerks). On the same day, IEBC to display poll registers at polling stations.
Friday, August 05, training and administration of the oath of the security agents to be conducted. IEBC to also inspect polling stations and test transmission of results.
Saturday, August 06, preparations and execution of cascaded training of elections officials.
Monday, August 08, deployment of polling station personnel, materials, and The Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS).
Tuesday, August 09, the opening of polling stations from 6.00 am - 5.00 pm.
Wednesday, August 10, counting, tallying, and announcement of results at polling stations. Electronic transmission of Presidential results from polling stations to begin the same day.
Friday, August 12, collection and announcement of Presidential results at the constituency level.
Monday, August 15, tallying, verification, announcement, and declaration of Presidential results at National Tallying Centre. Collation, announcement, and declaration of all other results.
Sunday, August 28, scanning and publication of results forms before the official gazettement.
IEBC may make adjustments to some of the timeliness but the election date remains fixed on Tuesday, August 9.
