Kenya’s electoral body has started clearing candidates for the presidential election scheduled for August 9, 2022.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) shortlisted a total of 16 candidates from an initial list of 56 aspirants who and will now begin clearing those who meet the requirements run for the presidency in the August polls.
Among those who are expected to be registered include Deputy President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The two are considered to be early frontrunners in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is barred from running in the poll as he is serving the last of his two mandated terms.
The presidential aspirants are required to show compliance with Chapter 6 of the Constitution on leadership and integrity.
They are also required to submit clearance certificates from relevant agencies.
The Commission will also register candidates for the National Assembly, Senate, County Woman Member to the National Assembly, and County Assembly elections.
The IEBC registration will run until June 6.
Ahead of the August 9 election, the Commission officially opened the campaign period on Sunday, and will run until August 7.
