U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Dr. Geeta Rao Gupta will visit Nairobi, Kenya, and Kigali, Rwanda from July 11-20, her first international trip as Ambassador-at-Large.

While in Kenya, Ambassador Gupta will meet with representatives from the Government of Kenya on shared gender equality priorities, as well as women leaders and civil society organizations, including an implementing partner focused on women, peace, and security efforts. The Ambassador will also visit the UNICEF-UNFPA Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting (FGM/C) in Kenya, a global program to which the U.S. proudly contributes $5 million annually.

Starting July 16, Ambassador Gupta will participate in the Women Deliver 2023 Conference, taking place in Kigali, Rwanda. The Ambassador will serve as head of the U.S. interagency delegation, comprised of representatives from the United States Agency for International Development and the Peace Corps. The Conference will convene 6,000 participants from international civil society, government, and non-profit organizations in Kigali. Ambassador Gupta’s participation highlights and advances the U.S. government’s gender equality policy priorities in the region and around the world, and will include a visit to a critical U.S. government program supporting adolescent girls and young women– the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored and Safe (DREAMS) program.
