A 13-year-old great granddaughter of Nelson Mandela died in a car crash after leaving a musical concert on Thursday ahead of the 2010 World Cup kick-off in South Africa.

A statement from the Nelson Mandela Foundation said Zenani Mandela was traveling in a car returning from the World Cup Kick-Off Concert at Orlando Stadium when the accident occurred. Also in the vehicle was Mandela's ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela who according to report sustained minor injured and was taken to a hospital near the Johannesburg city centre.

Zenani was the grand-daughter of Zindzi Mandela, Nelson and Winnie's daughter and celebrated her 13th birthday on June 9.

The police are investigating the issue for any possibility of homicide. The driver is in custody assisting in investigation.
