In an ambitious programme, the Catholic University will become the second to offer legal studies in the country after the public University of Malawi (UNIMA). It will also become the first privately owned school of higher learning to train lawyers.
Principle lecturer, Dr. Anaclet Phiri announced the college wanted to support government in the training of more lawyers. Currently, lawyers are trained at UNIMA’s Chancellor College, the only one that has had the sole liberty of doing so.
At the moment, there are only about 250 lawyers in the country working in both public and private organizations.
“These figures are low and we hope to train more lawyers so that Malawians can have wider access to legal services,” said Dr. Phiri.
