Nairobi — Football Kenya has proved yet again that it has no business running football after it failed to secure the rights to broadcast a crucial home match involving Harambee Stars.
Save for the paltry 30,000 fans that could secure tickets to attend the match pitting Uganda Cranes against Harambee Stars, the entire country was in the dark.
Football Kenya declined to grant Kenya Broadcasting Corporation the rights to broadcast the match as they insisted on being paid Sh1.5 million upfront. The station wanted to pay Sh700,000.
Whereas the amount demanded by Football Kenya might be justified because of the importance of the match, it would not have been possible for KBC to recoup its money within the short time left before kick-off.
Both the country and Football Kenya have lost out. The fans could not watch the game, while Football Kenya will not get any revenue.
Football Kenya has continuously sought government assistance in preparing the team, yet it was not ready to allow the match to be broadcast and take the matters to the authorities later to argue their case.
How will they justify their case next time they need assistance from the government? Football Kenya must be held accountable for its lack of vision and planning.
