A new governor has been sworn-in in Ekiti state, south west Nigeria after a Federal Appeal Court declared the gubernatorial candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria Kayode Fayemi, as the governor of Ekiti State, deposing incumbent governor Segun Oni of the ruling People`s Democratic Party.

The court had ruled that Fayemi won both the April 14, 2007 election and the re-run election of April 25, 2009 with highest lawful vote cast at the polls.

“Yesterday's declaration of the actual winner in the April 14, 2007 gubernatorial election and the supplementary election on April 25 and May 5, 2009 in Ekiti State is more than ample evidence that our God is good all the time,” the installed governor said in the Ekiti state capital, Ado-Ekiti moments after he had taken the oath of office on Saturday.

“With profound gratitude and great humility, I stand here today, before this distinguished gathering and declare that this the is arrival of a glorious new dawn…the hallowed justices of the appeal court have rescued our state and delivered your voice and your choice back to you, the good people of Ekiti State.”

Pledge

The newly installed governor pledged his determination to implement programmes that would improve the lives of the people of the south western state of Ekiti and promised the state would fund certain levels of education within the state among other pledges.

“Education …and weapon against ignorance shall receive a religious attention for the good of our people and to the greater glory of humanity, I declare today education free for all primary and secondary pupils, I also commit myself to reviewing the tuition fees that have been imposed on our universities,” Fayemi pledged amid cheers from the crowd of supporters.
