South Africa minister responsible for monitoring government programmes Collins Chabane has not given credence to rumours that there is an impending cabinet reshuffle. The Sunday Independent newspaper said President Jacob Zuma was "poised" to rearrange his cabinet, and that Planning Minister Trevor Manuel would go.
"The question is unfair," Chabane told the South African Press Association. "Rumours about a cabinet reshuffle have been around since the cabinet was formed. Ministers are doing their work as usual.”
Manuel has publicly disagreed with the ANC's left-leaning allies on issues such as the strength of the rand. South Africa's largest labour federation has recommended pegging the rand to the dollar, a move Manuel said was "financial suicide".
