The Economic Community of West African States - ECOWAS - is committed to a peaceful resolution of the electoral issues in Guinea and the subsequent enthronement of democracy, communications director for the sub regional body Sonny Ugoh said. Postponement of the Sunday polls spark violence in the country.

The communications director was speaking after renewed violence greeted the postponement of the presidential run-off election earlier scheduled for last Sunday with Diallo and Conde as the two contestants in the west African country.

“We have engaged with the people of Guinea, we have engaged with the stakeholders and we will continue to engage with them because we know that it is important for the stability of West Africa if Guinea returns to constitutional rule. It is important for us so that we can move ahead with the challenges of development. That is what is paramount for us,” Ugoh as quoted as saying by VOA.

Ugoh said ECOWAS wants all Guinean stakeholders to work together on an agreed election date and an electoral process that would guarantee fairness and transparency.

The ECOWAS communications director described the last weekend violence as unfortunate, saying “it does not in any way contribute to promoting peace and security in Guinea.”
