Six G4 security guards were arrested early Wednesday after a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) operative tipped police they were discussing firing of the party's first and second vice presidents.
Heavily armed police picked the men from the private security company in the capital Lilongwe, after informally discussing and faulting the move by DPP leader Bingu wa Mutharika, who said fired Joyce Banda and Khumbo Kachali were creating parallel structures to the party.
A DPP militia, reported Nyasa Times, overheard the six and reported the matter to senior party officials. They were arrested on allegations they ‘insulted’ Mutharika whilst on a night patrol in the Tuesday night.
Sources indicate the guards accused the Mutharika of using Banda during campaign to win women’s vote and imposing his young brother Peter Mutharika to become presidential candidate for DPP in 2014.
Zodiak Broadcasting Cooperation, one of the popular radio stations, also reported the issue during its midday bulletin.
