GENEVA, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- The total number of refugees fleeing from Cote d'Ivoire to the neighboring Liberia has grown to 14,000 following the post-electoral instability in the country, the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR said on Saturday.
The outpouring refugees, according to the UNHCR, is congesting some communities in the host country, while supplies such as food are running short.
"Our staff report that host community houses are full and congested," the UNHCR said, giving example that in the area of Butuo "there are homes where 7 to 20 family members share a single room."
On Dec. 21, the UNHCR estimated the number of Ivorians fleeing westwards into Liberia and Guinea to be around 6,000, but the number is growing rapidly.
The UN refugee agency said it is ready to cope with the needs of up to 30,000 refugees in the region.
On Thursday, the UN Human Rights Council passed a resolution at a special session, strongly condemning human rights violations that had taken place in Cote d'Ivoire following the Nov. 28 presidential election, and called upon all the relevant parties to "immediately put an end" to all violation actions.
